Open Education Week (OE Week) is an annual celebration and opportunity for those working in Open Education to actively share their achievements and learn about what others are achieving worldwide. This year Open Education Week is March 3-7, and TDL member libraries are ready with a set of exciting events and programs.

OpenEd Week Lunch and Learn: Introduction to the OpenEd Division

Learn about the Libraries’ OpenEd division, who we are, and how we can support your instructional goals. This presentation covers Open Education Resources (OER), library-licensed materials, library reserves, and open digital publishing via Pressbooks. This session is for course instructors, instructional designers and teaching assistants.

Stop by our table with SGA in the Memorial Student Center – We’ll supply everything you need to write a thank-you note to your instructors who use low-cost or no-cost course materials. Let them know how much you appreciate them for choosing materials with affordability in mind.

OpenEd Week Lunch and Learn: Creative Commons Licensing and Fair Use Workshop

Harness the power of open copyright to lower student costs for course materials. This hands-on workshop will walk you through understanding the 6 creative commons licenses, as well as Fair Use concepts to create and use Open Education Resources for your course. This session is for course instructors, instructional designers, and teaching assistants.

Open Education 101

Unlimited and free access to course materials, relevant and customizable resources for your students, and an ever-expanding global community of practice – sounds great, right? Ariana Santiago, Head of Open Education Services at the University of Houston Libraries, will lead an introductory session on open educational resources and practices, exploring the discovery, revision, remixing, and creation of new open materials, along with how to connect with the larger community to dive deeper into the world of open education.

Introduction to the Shared Network Webinar

This webinar offers an overview of the shared network’s capabilities and its role in fostering collaboration across the Texas A&M University System. Participants will hear insights from representatives of campuses currently utilizing Pressbooks, who will share their experiences, best practices, and strategies for success in publishing open educational resources. This session provides an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the shared network and its potential to support institutional and system-wide educational goals. Target audience is anyone interested in Pressbooks.

Student Voices: Unlocking Affordable Education Through OER

In partnership with SGA, join us as students discuss the impact of high course materials and the benefits of enrolling in courses where professors choose to use OER, course reserves, and library licensed material to reduce the cost of course materials. This session is for students and instructors and anyone interested in learning about open educational resources (OER) and their impact.

In this beginner-friendly session, we’ll walk you through the basics of creating your first book in Pressbooks. You’ll learn how to set up your book, add chapters, and organize content to start building a professional publication. Target audience: Anyone who wants to publish in Pressbooks.

Perspectives on Pressbooks

As open education initiatives continue to expand, some faculty are looking to create their own open educational resources. Pressbooks is a platform which houses a large catalog of open access books published by nearly 200 organizations and networks. In this virtual session, UT faculty members discuss their experience with using Pressbooks to create and house their open education projects. Panelists will discuss challenges, successes, and give insight into how others might utilize the program. This event is free and open to the UT community, but registration is required.
