Member Allowance and Costs

Storage Allowances

Maintenance and hosting of the DuraCloud™ platform within the TDL infrastructure is undertaken for members at no additional cost to them. TDL members receive the benefits of a professionally managed application and infrastructure, along with a “Space” within DuraCloud™ @TDL for ingesting content.

Additionally, each TDL Regular Member receives an allowance for DuraCloud™ @TDL storage as part of their membership fee, in the amounts seen below:

  • Sustaining Members:  $1000/ year for storage
  • Supporting Members:  $250/ year for storage

Costs for storage over these amounts will be billed back to the member institution on an annual basis. Periodic (twice yearly) reports will be sent to members with information about their DuraCloud™ @TDL usage.

Storage Costs

In order to best calculate potential cost for storage of materials, TDL Members should be aware of the cost for each storage option and plan accordingly as they approach digital preservation planning.

Amazon S3

  • Storage:  $360 per TB/ year
  • Ingestion (Data In):  $0
  • Retrieval (Data Out):  $120 per TB

Amazon Glacier

  • Storage:  $120 per TB/ year
  • Ingestion (Data In):  $0
  • Retrieval (Data Out):  $120 per TB retrieved

Texas Advanced Computing Center (iRODS @TACC)

  • Storage:  $205 per TB/ year
  • Ingestion (Data In):  $120 per TB uploaded
  • Retrieval (Data Out):  $120 per TB retrieved

Example Scenarios:

Scenario 1: Storage of materials at Amazon S3

A member institution wishes to store 10 TB in Amazon S3

10TB x $360 per TB/yr = $3600 for storage for one year (minus the $250 allowance as a supporting member, for a total of $3350)

Scenario 2: Retrieval of materials from Amazon Glacier

A member institution wishes to store 5 TB in Amazon Glacier.  After a year, the institution realizes they have lost data from other systems and wish to retrieve 3 TB of the data stored at Amazon Glacier.

5 TB x $ 120 per TB/ yr = $600 for storage for one year  (minus the $250 allowance as a supporting member, for a total of $350)

3 TB to be retrieved x $120 per TB retrieved = $360 for retrieval

Total cost of storage and retrieval (minus allowance) = $960 ($710)

Scenario 3: Storage of Materials at TACC with Retrieval

A member institution wishes to store 6 TB at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC).  After three years, disaster strikes and they have lost everything on their other servers and need to retrieve all materials.

6 TB x $120 per TB upload charge = $720 for upload

6 TB x 3 years x $210 per year storage =  $3780 storage cost over three years (minus the $250 allowance, $3530)

6 TB x $120 per TB retrieved = $720 for retrieval

Scenario 4: Storage at Multiple Locations

A member institution wishes to store 3 TB at Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier and TACC.  After two years, they review the cost of this storage.

3 TB x $360 TB/ yr at S3 x 2 years = $2160

3 TB x $120 TB/ yr at Glacier x 2 years = $720

(3 TB x $210 TB/ yr at TACC x 2 years) + (3 TB x $120 upload charge) = ($1260) + ($360) = $1620

Total Cost = $4500 (minus 2 yr of allowance  at $250/ yr = $4000)
