TDL GIS Interest Group’s “Georeferenceathon”

Georeferenceathon! Join us Friday, July 25 from 1-3:30pm for a free session that will focus on teaching complete beginners how to georeference scanned maps. Feel free to bring your own maps or use maps from our institutions’ collections that we will provide. No prior GIS or georeferencing experience necessary! Also, bring whatever sweet treat, snack, or drink you use to beat the Texas heat!

Georeferencing is the process of converting a static image, such as a scanned map, aerial photograph, or architectural plan, into a usable geospatial dataset. By assigning real-world coordinates to the image, it is transformed from a simple image into a data layer that can be used for analysis within a Geographic Information System (GIS).

The output of georeferencing is a new, spatially-aware dataset that can be integrated with other data for scholarly research. This allows researchers to do things like: analyze historical change, perform spatial analysis, integrate and synthesize data, digitize features, and improve findability.

Georeferencing makes cultural and historical materials machine-readable in a spatial context, unlocking them as valuable sources for data-driven research and scholarship.
