DESCRIPTION:Course marking—the practice of designating courses that use open educational resources (OER) or other no- or low-cost resources—helps students identify affordable course options in their class schedules\, enabling them to make informed decisions when they register for classes. In addition to providing valuable information to students\, course markings also help institutions assess the use and impact of OER. However\, it can be challenging to initiate and maintain this process of marking courses\, which often involve a large number of stakeholders across the institution. In this session\, we will hear how three institutions have initiated and improved upon course marking processes for their students. DESCRIPTION:Georeferenceathon! Join us Friday\, July 25 from 1-3:30pm for a free session that will focus on teaching complete beginners how to georeference scanned maps. Feel free to bring your own maps or use maps from our institutions’ collections that we will provide. No prior GIS or georeferencing experience necessary! Also\, bring whatever sweet treat\, snack\, or drink you use to beat the Texas heat! \nGeoreferencing is the process of converting a static image\, such as a scanned map\, aerial photograph\, or architectural plan\, into a usable geospatial dataset. By assigning real-world coordinates to the image\, it is transformed from a simple image into a data layer that can be used for analysis within a Geographic Information System (GIS). \nThe output of georeferencing is a new\, spatially-aware dataset that can be integrated with other data for scholarly research. Absolutely no prior GIS experience is required to fully participate in these webinars. \nWebinar #1: 3D Modeling of Library Spaces Using QGIS \nPresenters: Michael Shensky (UT Austin) and Katherine Strickland (UT Austin) \nIn spring 2023 the UT Libraries worked with students in the UT Austin Master of Science in Information Technology and Management program on a  project to create a 3D interactive model of the Perry-Castaneda Library (PCL) Map Room that could be deployed as a web app. This project resulted in the successful development of a new web app that was created using open source software and which will allow patrons to locate maps when visiting the PCL Map Room in-person and explore the collection virtually. This presentation identifies many different ways that bias can enter into the promotion and tenure review process\, whether it’s bias from external review letters\, student evaluations of teaching\, or metrics used to evaluate scholarly productivity.   This presentation shares insights from an ADVANCE workshop on promotion and tenure\, as well as a collaborate NSF research project on bias in the promotion and tenure review process. \nGuest Speaker:  Dr. Cynthia Werner is the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences & former Director of ADVANCE\, Texas A & M University. We want to hear about it! Texas Digital Library’s GIS Interest Group is hosting a “PechaKucha Day” to share experiences\, plans\, and ideas about how libraries and archives are supporting and promoting GIS activities throughout the state. \nWhether you’re already offering a full suite of GIS services\, planning a one-off event\, trying to get some maps online\, or are just beginning to imagine how you might make use of GIS technologies\, we want to hear from YOU. We invite you to share your work and ideas in what we hope will be an informal\, fast-paced\, and FUN virtual show-and-tell. \nPechaKucha nights traditionally include presentations of 20 images\, with 20 seconds commentary on each. In other words…presentations are meant to be LIGHTNING FAST and not very in-depth.
